Typically garages go unheated during the winter, although with more and more homeowners using their garages as workspaces, they’re looking for ways to add heat. Space heaters offer the easiest option for adding heat, but as this article points out, there are several things to consider when looking at heaters.
- Standard electric space heaters are probably the safest space heaters because they don’t require ventilation. However, they’re not good for heating a large area.
- Kerosene space heaters offer more heat for a larger area, but because they burn fuel, they require ventilation in the garage. They also don’t have thermostats making the room temperature hard to control.
- Gas space heaters need to be ventilated as well, but can come with thermostats. There are also options that allow them to vent directly outside through a hole cut in the garage wall. Some models also have sensors that will shut off the heater when there’s not enough fresh air in the room.
