7 Steps to the Complete Garage Makeover

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Did you know that you are just 7 steps away from the garage of your dreams? It’s true. So let’s dive right in…

1. Getting Ready: Before you jump right into things, it is important to be prepared. So you will need to arm yourself. Gather heavy-duty trash bags, cardboard boxes, a marker to label those boxes, packing tape, and whatever else you can think of!

2. Sort and Purge: Make three piles. The first is for things to keep, the next is things to give away, and the last is for things to throw out.

3. Purge Some More: Odds are that after you sort through your clutter, your pile of things to keep may still be a little larger than you want. So go back through and purge some more!

4. Designate Storage Areas: Now that you know what items you are keeping and what you are getting rid of, designate storage areas for those items. If you don’t have enough room for everything, feel free to purge again…

5. Donate and Throw Away: Now it is time to do something with those other two piles. The Salvation Army (salvationarmy.org) and Goodwill (goodwill.org) accept many types of goods and in a lot of areas will pick up donations. For other groups that may benefit from your donations, visit guidestar.org.

6. Time to Clean: Has your garage ever been this clean before? I didn’t think so. Now would be a great time to clean up!

7. Seek Professional Help: TLC Garage Works can provide you what you need. Whether it is a complete garage makeover, a garage remodel, a new garage floor, better garage storage organization, new garage cabinets or garage shelving, TLC Garage Works, Inc has the right garage organization solutions for you.

How To Make A Home Office In Your Garage

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

Are you looking for an area in your home to serve as an office space? If yes, try making an office in your garage. We have a few tips for you to get started. Read below.

The majority of homes with a garage have a tandem garage. A tandem garage usually has extra space for two cars to be parked one after another. If you do not need all that extra space, then this space for another car is perfect to construct an office in your garage.

Why Create An Office In Your Garage?

It is a great idea to make an office in your garage because you are more likely to be productive in your garage due to the quiet atmosphere that the main house area will never allow.

How To Make Your Office Space In Your Garage

You can create your garage office by putting up a wall or barrier of some sort that will separate your vehicles from your office space. This will minimize distractions and give you the privacy you need to get work done.

Add electrical outlets or have a suitable extension chord to provide you with the necessary electricity for a phone, computer, printer or any electronic device you will need. Be sure you have efficient heating and cooling in your garage office. A great way to do this is by having a portable heater and air condition. Be sure you have good insulation installed on your garage walls and have a tight seal on your garage door.

Tips to Help Organize Your Garage

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Cars and garages parted ways long ago. Nowadays, garages function more as additional storage space and less as an indoor haven for you favorite automobile. Unfortunately, this means that many garages are carelessly filled with clutter, devoid of any organization whatsoever.

Below you will find several tips to help you better organize your garage.

Still want to park your car in your garage? Set aside a specific area for your car. Outline this area with reflective take and utilize the rest of the room for storage.

Setting Garage Rules: The number 1 rule should be “think before you store!” In other words, run through a mental checklist in your mind. Is this item worth storing or could I throw it away? Do I have room to adequately store this item?  Is this an item that will need to be easily accessible? Etc.

Increase Storage Space: Install some new shelves and cabinets to not only increase your storage space, but also make organizing your items a lot easier.

Pegboards: These are great for hanging tools and gardening equipment. It keeps everything out of the way, but still makes them easily accessible for when you need them.

Overhead Racks: Store bicycles, canoes, and other seasonal items out of sight by utilizing an often forgotten area of your garage.

So get to work and transform your garage into a useable room.

Tips for Storing Christmas Decorations

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Instead of just throwing your Christmas decorations into a pile in your garage, take a little more time and care this January and make sure your wreaths, ornaments, Christmas trees, and other decorations are not only stored safely, but are also organized. To help, we at TLC Garage Works Inc. have compiled a list of Christmas decoration storage tips. They include:

Storing Christmas Linens: Storing your linens, towels, rugs and blankets in a suitcase is the best way to protect them from moisture and ensure they look just as cheerful next Christmas!

Storing Christmas Wreaths: Be sure to store your wreath in a large enough container. The worst thing you can do is cram a wreath into a box it doesn’t fit in. This will cause it to lose its shape.

Storing Christmas Trees: While it may seem like a good idea, storing your artificial Christmas tree in the same box it came in is actually not a good plan. Cardboard boxes deteriorate, making them prone to insect infestations. Instead, consider Christmas tree bag or Christmas tree box.

Storing Christmas Ornaments: Larger and more delicate ornaments should be stored in the box that they came in. Smaller ornaments can be organized and stored in egg cartons.

Storing Christmas Candles: The best way to store candles is to wrap them each in a sock to prevent scratching. Also be sure to store them in an area where they will not melt.

Storing Christmas Lights: Organizing Christmas lights before you pack them is a great way to save time next December. Instead of untangling strands of lights, you will be able to take them out of storage and get right to work decorating your home.

Labeling Your Christmas Decorations: Another great way to save time next year is to properly label boxes and bins this year!

Adding Garage Storage Space: This is where TLC Garage Works can help you to better store and organize your Christmas decorations!

Garage Organization: Ideas for Every Lifestyle

Monday, October 17th, 2011

You design your entire home to match your lifestyle. So doesn’t it make sense to do the same with your garage? After all, garages are more often than not the rooms in which we practice our hobbies – painting, woodwork, etc.

So how can you better organize your garage to compliment who you are? Consider the following…

For the Handyman: The garage is ideal for the handyman (or woman). But the tools you need often take up a ton of space. So what is the best way to transform your garage into a handyman paradise? A work bench, of course. You can make this yourself, hire a professional to do the construction for you, or buy a pre-made workbench.

For the Gardner: If you were blessed with a green thumb, you can transform your garage into your own private gardening utopia with the simple addition of a gardening bench. Much like a workbench, a gardening bench provides you with the proper storage and organization to make the most of your garage. And remember, plumbing can even be installed in your garage for ease of watering and washing.

For the Sportsman: If you are more of the outdoorsy type, your garage offers you the perfect place to store all of your camping, biking, and hiking gear. However, if you do not take the time to store all of this bulky equipment properly, it can get damaged, dirty, and in the way.  But there are tons of ways to conveniently store your sports equipment, including: sports racks, hooks, and shelving.

There are plenty of ways to turn your garage into the perfect hobby haven. For more tips, or if you have any questions, contact TLC Garage Works by calling 888-742-5852 or click here today!

Storing Your Patio Furniture for the Winter

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

The harsh winter weather can wreak havoc on your outdoor furniture. That is why it is important to properly clean and safely store your patio furniture once the weather begins to turn. This will help to prolong the life of your furniture, ensuring that you have usable chairs, tables, etc. come spring.

1.    Take the time to wash your furniture. Scrub away dirt and grime with a soft scrub cleaning solution and a sponge.

2.    Dry the furniture as needed.

3.    Bring the pillows and umbrellas into the house for safekeeping.

4.    Stack lightweight chairs and other furniture on top of each other. This will help increase overall storage space

5.    Store your furniture in a garage or other indoor storage space. If you don’t have indoor space available, place a large chair cover over all of the stacked chairs.

6.    If some pieces of furniture are to be left outside, cover them with heavy-duty patio covers.

7.    Brush off all of the snow collecting on the furniture throughout the winter months. As the snow melts, water has an uncanny knack of finding its way to the furniture, causing damage when it freezes again.

How to Assess if Your Garage is Ready for a Conversion

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

A garage conversion is, perhaps, the quickest, most cost-effective, and simplest way to add living space and value to your home. Garages are basically blank canvases ready for your creative touch. The foundation, walls, and roof are already in place and the wiring is often sufficient. The only thing you need to do is figure out what you want – a playroom, game room, bedroom, theater, or man cave.

The conversion process should begin with an assessment of the garage and its many facets.

  1. What do you do about the garage door? Possible options include installing a patio door or framing a new wall that includes a large window.
  2. Un-insulated and slanted. Those are the two biggest problems surrounding most cement garage floors. You may want to consider leveling the floor and covering it with a more suitable surface.
  3. Garages are not climate controlled. If your garage is connected to your home, you may be able to extend existing ductwork into your new space. If that is not possible, you should look into an independent heating system, gas space heater or woodstove for the winter and a room air conditioner for the summer. Add insulation to walls, floor and ceiling before deciding how to heat and cool the space.
  4. Is your current wiring enough? If you expect to substantially increase electrical usage in the converted space, consider adding at least one new 20-amp circuit.
  5. What is the toughest part of any garage conversion? Plumbing. While getting water supplied to the garage is easy, drainage present a much tougher challenge.

Garage Trends

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Garages have come full circle. Homeowners are actually starting to use their garages for their intended purpose, parking. So clean out your garage and get with the times.

Today, homebuyers are refusing to buy homes without functional garages. And with the size of modern families, garages are growing in size. In the 80’s and 90’s, the standard garage was 21 feet by 21 feet and was just 7 feet high. This is no longer the case. With the size of modern SUVs and Trucks, the smallest a garage should be is 22×22 with a roof at least 9 feet high. As far as garages go, size matters!

Today, people want…

•      …a garage that offers organizational systems featuring bins, pull-out drawers, baskets, shelving, cabinets, workbenches and closets.

•      …wall hooks for hanging up garden tools and other items to keep clutter off the floor and eliminate the need to stack things in a corner.

•      …extra space in the garage that can be used as a workshop or hobby room.

•      …an auxiliary playroom for children, especially if the home has no attic or basement.

•     …enough room to park three cars.

•     …painted and sealed or polypropylene tiled floors.

Another garage trend is the auto elevator. In order to maximize space, this nifty garage accessory allows you to park 2 cars in one spot. You simply drive onto the elevator, get out of your car, push the button, and watch as you car rises in the air. You can then park another car underneath.

With innovations like this, you can see why the garage is making a comeback!
